Introduction

My excitement for taking the class began about a month ago when Jake Swann, the head instructor of Motorcycle Riders Course (MRC) first called Inaki about the very first all girls class that MRC was to hold over October 10, 11 and 12 and asked if I was interested in signing up. Let me tell you, that decision wasn't hard to make! The idea of learning the basics of how to operate a motorcycle (properly) with a bunch of girls was more than just perfect! I knew it would be a whole lot of fun! So, for the whole month since I found out about it, until it began, I could not hold my excitement!

Coming into the course, I knew I could drive a motorcycle! The one thing I knew I later had to admit to the instructors was that I lose all sense of coordination once I had a helmet on. I can't pinpoint what it is! Maybe because my peripheral vision is somewhat restricted or because my cheeks are being squished - I just don't know!

I think I first learned how to ride a bike back in 1994 when I was still in college. My training ground was a Honda NSR250R with my then boyfriend trailing me on his bike, hollering instructions as we rode through the streets in the village we lived in. Obviously, if we had helmets on, I wouldn't be able to hear a word so, that's how I first learned how to ride. Once I was finally accustomed to how that particular motorcycle worked, he recommended that I try it with all the right gear, helmet included! For the life of me, I could not get anything right!

I was releasing the clutch too quickly, I wasn't giving it enough gas, I couldn't tell left from right, I couldn't remember if it was one down five up or the other way around and worst of all - I felt like I couldn't see what was around me.

I know that if I had first gotten on the bike with a helmet on, I would've never had these assortments of problems but unfortunately for me, that wasn't the case and I never would've discovered this wonderful world of two-wheels without having to pedal!
